Government Shutdown Resources for Military Families
By Jillian Johnson, Digital Marketing Specialist, Blue Star Families
When the government shuts down, the ripple effects reach far beyond Capitol Hill. The impact is immediate and personal for military families, who face uncertainty around paychecks, paused services, and added stress on top of the challenges they already face.
For many military families — especially younger enlisted families — missing even one paycheck can mean the difference between stability and crisis. Families may be living paycheck to paycheck, with tight budgets stretched by rising housing costs, childcare, and everyday essentials, up to and including food.
When that paycheck doesn't arrive on time, the consequences are immediate: bills go unpaid, rent falls behind, and families start to worry about where their next meal will come from. A government shutdown doesn't just delay income; it disrupts the fragile financial balance military families work so hard to maintain.
At Blue Star Families, we believe no family should have to shoulder this burden without support. That's why we've compiled a list of suggestions and gathered key resources to help you navigate this challenging time.
Call Your Creditors
First things first, as a military family, you have rights and protections that may extend to your landlord, bank, utilities, credit card companies, and other relevant parties, and it's essential to let them know you are affected by the shutdown. Many creditors actually have policies in place to help during times of hardship, and you may be able to have some of your bills placed on forbearance for either all or some of the duration of the shutdown. Contact your financial institution to determine what policies they currently have in place regarding advance pay or loans during a shutdown.
Reach Out to Your Military Relief Society and/or Financial Institution
Our research shows that 1 in 3 military families has less than $3,000 in savings, and in times like these, that cushion can disappear almost overnight. Some banks like USAA and Navy Federal Credit Union have government shutdown programs to support your family. Military relief societies are equipped to assist with short-term financial needs, including interest-free loans, grocery vouchers, and emergency funds. They will remain open and ready to help during the shutdown. Relief societies include:
Find Local Food Banks In Your Area
Local food banks and pantries exist to help feed communities during times of need and serve as a compassionate resource during these times. Churches and organizations often host food pantries, providing additional resources for continued assistance. Feeding America is a valuable resource for locating food banks in your local area. Just type in your zip code, and the search will pull up the location of the food bank(s) nearest to your location.
Take Care Of Your Mental Health
Shutdowns don't just affect paychecks; they can also take a toll on mental health. The stress of uncertainty can be overwhelming, and it doesn't always dissipate once the shutdown ends. Military OneSource offers confidential, nonclinical counseling 24/7, with counselors who understand the unique aspects of military life. Taking care of your mental well-being helps you stay ready for everything else: your family, your responsibilities, and yourself.
The Veterans Crisis Line also offers 24/7, confidential crisis support. You do not have to be enrolled in VA benefits or healthcare to connect. You can call, chat, or text with them, so please know that you are not alone.
