Reflecting on a Transformative Year: From Uncertainty to Advocacy at Blue Star Families
By Angelique “Angie” Cherikos | DEPLOY Fellow
As my fellowship approaches its conclusion in September, I find myself reflecting on my transformative year at Blue Star Families. Initially, I entered the fellowship with some apprehension, transitioning from a role in an animal shelter and feeling significantly younger than the other fellows, which left me feeling underqualified and somewhat trivial. However, the camaraderie and support from the other cohort 3 fellows was exceptional. They not only encouraged me but actively fostered a safe environment for all of us to express ourselves freely. Through Tim’s DEI wheel, we explored the diverse aspects that make each of us unique. Ani’s check-ins taught us about each other’s histories and families. Ryan’s holiday party provided a much-needed opportunity to unwind and see each other’s fun side. Our in-person week at Georgetown University cemented a sentiment we all shared: this cohort felt like family. The sense of belonging this cohort instilled in me became the cornerstone of my advocacy for the National Capital Region Chapter’s Spaces for Belonging program.

Spaces for Belonging, initially a small part of my fellowship, quickly evolved into my passion project. This monthly meetup-style program offers LGBTQ+ kids with military parents a space to find friendship and community. Through this initiative, I acquired invaluable skills such as advocacy, program management, partnership building and maintenance, event planning, and more. Additionally, I learned to comfortably share my experiences to empower others. Witnessing this program’s growth fills me with immense joy, not just because it signifies a job well done but also because it provides an essential, safe space for our LGBTQ+ military families.
My success during this fellowship would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the Campaign for Inclusion team, the NCR team, the DEPLOY Fellows, my mentors, and the sponsorship of Lockheed Martin. Their guidance enabled me to develop a successful program in the NCR Chapter and leave the fellowship with a profound sense of accomplishment. One key takeaway from my time at BSF is the realization that our military community is incredibly diverse and supportive, with a genuine desire to help each other, much like organizations such as BSF strive to do. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with this organization and eagerly anticipate joining the DEPLOY Fellowship alumni group.
Thank you all! Over and out!
