Missing Chapters: Diversifying the Outdoor Narrative

The outdoor narrative often feels like it's missing some crucial chapters for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) communities due to the lack of representation in media and marketing. When the imagery and stories don't reflect the diversity of our experiences, it's not just a gap in the media landscape — it's a message that says, "this space isn't for you." Seeing predominantly one-dimensional portrayals of outdoor enthusiasts can make it challenging for BIPOC individuals to envision themselves as integral parts of the outdoor story. It's not just about inclusion; it's about creating a narrative that resonates with the rich tapestry of our experiences, which can foster a sense of belonging and empowerment in outdoor spaces. Representation matters, and until the outdoor media truly reflects the diversity of our communities, the narrative remains incomplete for all of us seeking adventure in the beauty of nature.

At the onset of COVID, my wife and I embarked on a house-hunting journey with the goal of creating a living space where her parents could join us in raising our sons while we navigated work demands. The quest for the perfect home proved challenging as properties swiftly disappeared from the market. It was our real estate agent who proposed a home nestled in a lake community, surrounded by parks and woods. Initially uncertain, I hesitated, as I had never envisioned myself in a community like this. Every movie I had ever seen always had rich Caucasian families in these types of neighborhoods. However, upon visiting the house and exploring the neighborhood, we were captivated by the serene surroundings. Ultimately, we made the decision to call this lake community our home. Now, our days are filled with outdoor adventures; summers are a symphony of lake activities — swimming, kayaking, fishing, and grilling. Our neighbors were welcoming and amazing. We've transformed our space into a welcoming haven, always open to friends, creating opportunities for them to bask in the beauty of the lake and connect with nature.
