Published on November 5, 2025

Have you ever wondered about the origins of Blue Star Families? Well, Bryn Mawr College, Kathy’s alma mater, did a write-up sharing the experiences that led her to cofound Blue Star Families.

Her story of holding down the home front while her Marine husband was deployed is not uncommon. In fact, many of your lives parallel hers —frequently losing jobs and children changing schools due to PCS moves. Here’s what Kathy said about Blue Star Families filling the need for military families to feel connected to the community,  something that was missing from the support other existing organizations and programs provided:

“[Care packages] was often something that would just go right in the trash because it was nothing that I wanted or needed. And in some ways, it made me feel worse. It’s not that no one was trying to do anything; it’s just that they were trying to do the wrong thing…People don’t realize that most of today’s service members don’t live on military bases. They’re in cities, suburbs, and small towns across America.”
