Military Families Treated with a Special Story Time from Second Lady Usha Vance at Camp Pendleton
On July 11th, Second Lady, Usha Vance, read to over 200 children and their families during the Blue Star Books event at Camp Pendleton. She was joined by volunteers from the Disneyland Resort as part of the Blue Star Disney Books program to spread the joy through reading.
Vance's trip is part of her Summer Reading Challenge for children in kindergarten through 8th grade. The challenge invites children to read 12 books of their choice between June 1st and September 5th, and track their progress in a Reading Log provided on the White House website.
After story time, families enjoyed arts and crafts, gift and book giveaways, and a surprise visit from the Disney character, Stitch, who came to greet the kids!
Our Blue Star Families CEO and founder Kathy Roth-Douquet said this about the Second Lady's visit:
"We're so excited to welcome Usha Vance here today and to have someone from the White House shining a spotlight on military kids, especially, Mrs. Vance is highlighting reading, and she's got a literacy challenge. So it dovetails beautifully with our Blue Star Disney Books program."
