Military BRATS: Born Ready And Tenacious.

Every year on April 30th, we pause to honor a group that often moves quietly behind the scenes of military service, the military brats.
That’s right. Brats.
And before you flinch, let me tell you what it stands for: Born Ready And Tenacious. But this day didn’t just appear out of nowhere.
In 2016, after a community-wide push to protect and preserve the term Military Brat, a name we’ve worn with pride for generations, National Military Brats Day was officially recognized on the National Day Calendar. The movement began in response to an attempt to rebrand us as “CHAMPS,” but we knew that “Brat” was never something to fix. It was something to own. That effort, led by groups like Military Brats, Inc. and voices from within our community, became more than resistance. It became a call to honor who we are.
Because we aren’t just tagging along on this journey. We’re navigating PCS moves, forming (and re-forming) friendships, learning to thrive in schools that change as fast as duty stations, and discovering the true meaning of adaptability before we even hit double digits.
I say “we” because I was one.
And like so many of our Blue Star Families, I know firsthand the strength it takes to grow up rooted in a community of constant motion.
National Military Brats Day isn’t just a square on the calendar.
It’s a recognition of a culture and a community within a community. One forged by movement, resilience, and sacrifice. According to the 2024 Military Family Lifestyle Survey (MFLS), over 4,500 active-duty families participated, and while it was the parents who filled it out, we know our children live the ripple effects of every issue mentioned: pay delays, deployment stress, the uncertainty of healthcare access, and the ache of goodbye.
Military brats hold space for transitions, for celebrations, for grief that never makes the headlines. And yet, they still rise.
The term “Military Brat” dates back to theories as early as 1921, possibly linked to the British acronym BRAT, which stands for “British Regiment Attached Traveler.” But wherever it started, we know where it landed: in our hands. And we turned it into something powerful. Something proud.
We don’t say brat to rebel. We say it because it’s who we are. Because we learned how to start over more times than most adults do. Because home was never just a zip code, it was a mindset. Whether we’re hosting a Dandelion Fest, celebrating the Month of the Military Child (MOMC), or simply raising a juice box in your honor today, our message stays the same:
We see you.
We honor you.
And we thank you.
We believe that when military kids thrive, the whole community thrives. That’s why our work continues through programs, connection, and heart-centered service.
So, to every military Brat out there, know that:
We see your courage when you step into that new classroom.
We feel your quiet strength when you hug your parent(s) goodbye, yet again.
We honor your flexibility, your joy, your grit.
With juice boxes and resilience,
With dandelions and determination,
Stay bold.
Stay brilliant.
Stay YOU!
Because you were Born Ready And Tenacious.
